Chelsea staff ‘damage Champions League trophy taking photos’

Chelsea confirm the Champions League trophy has been repaired after it was damaged by staff while taking photos

Chelsea have confirmed that the Champions League trophy was damaged while staff took pictures with the cup.

The Blues ended their wait to win Europe’s top prize when Didier Drogba’s winning kick in a dramatic penalty shootout helped Roberto Di Matteo’s side overcome Bayern Munich in the Champions League final in May.

Three members of their security staff reportedly broke a handle off the trophy while posing for photographs with the most prestigious piece of silverware in European club football.

The damaged trophy was brought to a London silversmith for repairs, and Chelsea officials have ordered an internal investigation into the incident.

A Blues spokesman said: “The trophy was accidentally damaged while pictures were being taken. It was minor damage and has already been repaired. We don’t make comment on staff matters.”

In 2011, Real Madrid defender Sergio Ramos dropped the Copa del Rey trophy underneath a double decker bus as the Spanish club paraded their latest piece of silverware around the Spanish capital.

The Spain international had been balancing the trophy on his head before accidentally dropping the trophy 15 feet onto the tarmac in front of the bus.

The driver failed to notice what had happened and continued to drag the famous cup along ground before security staff called a halt to the parade.

After the incident, Ramos insisted very little damage had been inflicted: “It’s in good shape”.
