David Beckham has been omitted from Great Britain’s football squad for London 2012 after Stuart Pearce apparently opted for Craig Bellamy, Micah Richards and Ryan Giggs as his three players over the age of 23 allowed to compete at the Olympics.

The former England captain and current LA Galaxy midfielder described the snub as “very disappointing”, and the 37-year-old has received plenty of support from the British public on Twitter.

England legend Gary Lineker (‏@GaryLineker) is shocked by Beckham’s omission: “Never thought for a second that David Beckham would be excluded from GB’s team. Then again Stuart Pearce has always been his own man. A terrible shame for Beckham having given so much to the Olympic bid and football. Would love him on our BBC sport team for #London2012! On another note… Will be brilliant to see Ryan Giggs finally have the opportunity to play in a major tournament.”

Former Chelsea midfielder Jody Morris ‏(@morriskid) is disappointed he won’t get to see Beckham’s trademark passes: “No Beckham at the Olympics..bit gutted with that I have to say…never grow tired of them daisy cutters or 60-yard zings!!”

Meanwhile, Red Mancunia ‏(@RedMancunia) is completely baffled: “Team GB used David Beckham’s name to sell a lot of tickets. He’s still good enough to play. Baffling snub. Disappointed.”

Inka Mullerova ‏(@Inunka) agrees: “Micah Richards over David Beckham?! Come on! How many people bought tickets so they can see Beckham playing for the country one last time?!”

Chelsea fan Trisha George ‏(@TrooBleu) is unhappy: “Gutted for David Beckham. He deserved to be part of Team GB. Having quarter-final tickets isn’t as exciting now. #londonolympics12”

And Stephen McConnell ‏(@Head54) considers the move to be a disservice to all of Beckham’s hard work: “Devastated for David Beckham not making the #TeamGB squad as he’s the reason they got to host the Olympics with his campaigning. #mistake”

Simon Walsworth (‏@simon1214) is shocked at Beckham’s omission: “David Beckham not included in the team GB squad!!?? Slap in the face of a legend. It’s made worse by Bellamy’s inclusion. #NothingMoreToSay”

And Dayne ‏(@dwhitt9) can’t fathom Bellamy’s inclusion ahead of Beckham: “David Beckham is more than a player and brings so much more to a team than anyone else! Should have been a definite! Instead they take Bellamy!”

Milly Angus (‏@milly_angus) is totally bemused: “David Beckham hasn’t been chosen for the Olympic squad, what is wrong with this country?”

Michael Pole ‏(@Michael_Pole) is upset for Beckham: “Gutted for David Beckham. Leading the British side out at an Olympics would have capped a remarkably successful career.”

However, Stuart Hollis ‏(@stuarthollis01) believes Stuart Pearce has made the right decision: “I have always liked David Beckham as a player and person but agree with what Stuart Pearce has done.”

And Dwayne Chivi ‏(@Dwaynechivi) also believes it’s a sensible decision: “I don’t see why it’s surprising that David Beckham did not get picked in the Olympic squad, they need a good team not a famous name!”

Daniel (‏@_DanielRobinson) is happy Richards has finally got called into a squad: “Micah Richards picked ahead of David Beckham for the Team GB squad. Finally someone has sense to include Micah! Good choice pearce. #mcfc”

Paul Hurrell ‏(@Paul_Hurrell) is content with Pearce’s selection: “Bit harsh on David Beckham being left out the #TeamGB squad, but Ryan Giggs, Richards and Bellamy all decent players.”

Goodchild Nwosu ‏(@Odii28) hails Pearce’s decision: “Stuart Pearce is my man for having the guts to exclude David Beckham for Team GB squad. Can you imagine that? That shows that he has balls!”

Finally, Oba Akinwale ‏(@obaakinwale) won’t believe the news until this summer’s main man for all the gossip – Wigan chairman Dave Whelan – confirms Beckham’s absence: “I don’t believe David Beckham when he says he’s been left out of the Team GB squad. I need to hear it from Dave Whelan.”
