Roy Hodgson and the England team are winning the game on Twitter as well as the pitch, according to a study.

Statistics that cover the beginning of the European championship to Tuesday’s crucial win in Ukraine reveal that negative tweets about the England team have decreased by 43 per cent – a huge drop in Twitter terms.

The player with the biggest ‘sentiment’ increase is Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, whose performances have earned him 240 per cent increase in positive tweets. Ashley Young, meanwhile, has seen an increase of negative tweets by over 200 per cent.

Negative sentiment about manager Hodgson has also dropped by 50 per cent – and now that England have qualified for the knockout stages of the competition, positive tweets for the team has risen by 80 per cent, according to a study by digital marketing agency Silverbean.

John Terry is the England player most tweeted about, with an average of 3055 tweets per day – but captain Steven Gerrard wins the Twitter popularity contest with 81 per cent approval, with goalkeeper Joe Hart close behind on 69 per cent.

“As England progress in the tournament fans are taking to Twitter to register their approval or disapproval of team performances and individual players,” said Neil Robbins, managing director of Silverbean.

“Our software which captures all the Twitter statistics also captures and reflects the mood of the nation. At the moment, we appear to be cautiously optimistic.”

England’s next Euro 2012 game is a quarter-final showdown against Italy in Kiev on Sunday.
