Daniel Sturridge admits he was left “hurt” after being left out of Roy Hodgson’s England squad for Euro 2012.

The Chelsea striker, 22, looked to be on course for a call-up after he impressed for most of the season, netting 11 goals between August and February under former Blues boss Andre Villas-Boas.

But the forward failed to keep up his form in front of goal following Roberto Di Matteo’s appointment as interim boss, managing just two goals in 18 appearances towards the end of the campaign.

A disappointing end to the season culminated in Sturridge not featuring in the Blues’ FA Cup and Champions League final clashes before it was announced he did not make Hodgson’s final squad.

“I feel hurt, but you know, maybe it is a blessing in disguise,” Sturridge told the Jamaica Observer.

“It’s going to spur me on to do better. It’s going to drive me to want more success and to be a better footballer. I’m upset about it, but not too much.”
