Euro 2012: Real Madrid and Barcelona players ‘on good terms’
Spain captain Iker Casillas insists there is no tension between Real Madrid and Barcelona players at the European championship
Iker Casillas insists there are no rifts in the Spain squad, despite the intense rivalry between Real Madrid and Barcelona.
Most of the European championship holders’ squad play for one of the two La Liga giants, whose meetings in 2010-11 often boiled over due to on-pitch tension.
But although Spain captain Casillas admits tensions were running high at the end of last season, the Real Madrid goalkeeper believes those wounds have healed ahead of the defence of their European crown.
“Players from Real Madrid and Barcelona were not on good terms last year,” said Casillas. “It would have been problematic if the tournament had been played then.
“But this year has been good. We are going to play the maximum we can. We play for our club sides and there can be moments of confusion.
“But now there is a strong motivation for all of us. We look positively as we play for the national team.”
