Steven Gerrard admits losing Gary Cahill for the European championship is a “massive blow” for England’s hopes in Poland and Ukraine.

The Chelsea centre-half was ruled out of the tournament after a scan on Sunday revealed a double jaw fracture following a heavy collision with goalkeeper Joe Hart during the 1-0 win over Belgium on Saturday.

Cahill joins John Ruddy, Gareth Barry and Frank Lampard on the list of players ruled out of the tournament following Roy Hodgson’s 23-man squad announcement last month.

Liverpool defender Martin Kelly has been called up as Cahill’s replacement, but Gerrard admits the Three Lions will miss the Chelsea defender’s quality at the back at Euro 2012.

“Losing Gary is a massive blow,” said Gerrard. “His performances in the last six months have been colossal for Chelsea. He was a colossus in the Champions League final win over Bayern Munich. We needed him.

“I am angry because we have lost some big players with a tournament eight or nine days away. That’s the blow and that’s the price you pay for these warm-up games.

“To do well in these tournaments you have to have your big players and to lose Gary is another huge blow on the back of Frank Lampard and Gareth Barry.”
