Steven Gerrard has confirmed he will continue as England captain after the Three Lions’ quarter-final defeat by Italy at Euro 2012.

The 32-year-old Liverpool was appointed permanent skipper by manager Roy Hodgson last month after the former West Bromwich Albion boss took charge of the national team following Fabio Capello’s departure.

“I’ve had a brief chat with the manager and he’s told me he wants me to continue,” Gerrard told a news conference on Monday. “I’m there and I’m available as long as I’m wanted at this level.

“I’ve loved the responsibility and I’ve enjoyed every minute of it. I’ve tried my best, I’ve given it everything I’ve got. I’ve given it my best shot.”
