Gareth Bale has backed Kyle Walker to write himself into Tottenham Hotspur folklore after the right-back enjoyed a breakthrough season at White Hart Lane.

Walker, who was loaned out to Aston Villa last January, was crowned the PFA Young Player of the Year in May after he cemented his spot as Spurs’ first-choice right-back last term, with two goals in 37 Premier League appearances.

The Sheffield United youth graduate, who signed an improved deal in May, was also capped by England twice but missed out on a place in Roy Hodgson’s Euro 2012 squad due to a toe injury.

However, Bale is tipping his Spurs and potential Great Britain team-mate to improve next season, insisting opponents fear Walker’s searing pace from defence.

“He needed a run in the team, he got that and he’s showed exactly what he can do this season,” Bale told Spurs’ website.

“He’s played really well. He’s set himself a benchmark this season and hopefully he can maintain it.

“Players know all about him now, they will be looking to stop those forward runs and he has to find a way around it – I’m sure he will.”

The Football Association had ruled that no England players at Euro 2012 would be considered for the London Games, but Walker’s injury ruled him out of this summer’s tournament.

And the Tottenham star is on course to recover in time to be part of Stuart Pearce’s Team GB squad for the Olympics in late July and August.
