Jan Vertonghen could finalise a move to Tottenham Hotspur by the end of the week, according to the Ajax captain’s agent.

The 25-year-old defender has been heavily linked with a move to the Premier League in recent weeks, with Spurs’ north London rivals Arsenal also reportedly interested in Vertonghen.

But his agent, Mustapha Nakhli, confirmed that his client has been in advanced talks with the White Hart Lane outfit and hinted that Ajax’s asking price is the only stumbling block to a deal being completed in the coming days.

“Jan is waiting. The clubs are close,” Nakhli told Voetbal International. “I hope it will be this week. I think it will. We are talking to Tottenham.”

When asked about the possible £15m fee being excessive, Nakhli added: “Fifteen million? Jan has a contract until mid-2013. So what do you think?”

Nakhli’s comments come days after Spurs manager Harry Redknapp admitted his interest in bringing the “versatile” Belgium international to the club this summer.

“Jan is a terrific passer and versatile, too. He can play at the heart of defence but also plays very comfortable at left-back. I hope a deal is done but I don’t think it’s quite finished yet,” Redknapp told the Sun.

Vertonghen would provide extra reinforcement in defence for Redknapp’s side, with Ledley King considering his future as speculation claiming the centre-half may move into a coaching role at Spurs gathers pace.

“Tottenham has been the only club for me and if I can’t play here then I shall look to be involved in another capacity,” said King last Friday.
