The Republic of Ireland suffered a demoralising 3-1 defeat by Croatia in their opening Group C game in Poznan on Sunday night, damaging their hopes of qualifying for the latter stages of Euro 2012.

Giovanni Trapattoni’s side now face a daunting task, with ties against Spain and Italy to come. Joey Barton, Phil Neville and Michael Owen led the flurry of Tweets during and after the game.
