Rio Ferdinand heaped praise on Roy Hodgson’s “new-look” England after Danny Welbeck scored a first-half winner in a resolute 1-0 victory over Belgium at Wembley on Saturday.

It means England enter Euro 2012 fresh from successive 1-0 wins in their two warm-up games, and the victory prompted a mix response from some of England’s celebrity supporters on Twitter.

Piers Morgan ‏(@piersmorgan) is feeling patriotic: “Finally, every single England player singing the National Anthem – bet Hodgson ordered them too. Quite right too, especially this weekend.”

BBC DJ Johnathan Joseph (‏@TheRealDjSpoony) is impressed by Danny Welbeck’s strike: “Good win Steven Gerrard, great slide Ashley Young, special finish Danny Welbeck. #England”

Red Devils midfielder Tom Cleverley ‏(@tomclevz23) is loving the United link: “Yesss Welbeck and no shock Young is directly involved in another England goal!”

While Southampton legend Matt Le Tissier ‏(@mattletiss7) is keen not to get too carried away after Welbeck’s goal: “Did the commentator just say now were spoilt for choice up front with Danny Welbeck or Andy Carroll!!!! Seriously!”

Queens Park Rangers captain Joseph Barton ‏(@Joey7Barton) is impressed by Welbeck’s goal, but not the paper planes flooding the Wembley pitch: “Great finish from Welbeck. On a negative note these planes are doing my head in. Stop throwing them and watch the footy please.”

But Zak Whitbread ‏(@ZakWhitbread) can see why the supporters need to turn to the paper planes for entertainment: “England games are always so #Dead”

Comedian Jack Whitehall (‏@jackwhitehall) sees the funny side to David Beckham’s latest style: “Loved the England centurions parade at half-time but when did David Beckham turn into Raul Meireles?”

Former Republic of Ireland midfielder Matt Holland ‏(@mattholland8) finds Beckham’s tache funny: “Great effort from Beckham. I couldn’t grow a tache like that even if I never shaved again!!!”

However David’s wife Victoria Beckham (victoriabeckham) is very proud of the former England captain: “Congratulations David on playing over 100 games for England, we are so proud!! X VB”

Celebrity Arsenal supporter Piers Morgan ‏(@piersmorgan) is amused at Chelsea’s apparent waste of money on Belgium’s Eden Hazard: “On this evidence, Mr Hazard is worth about a quarter of what he thinks he is. Possibly a fifth.”

Meanwhile, England legend Gary Lineker (@GaryLineker) wants to know why Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain is used so sparingly used by Arsene Wenger: “Oxlade-Chamberlain looks a great prospect. Wonder why Arsene Wenger hasn’t used him more? Must be something.”

Former Tottenham chairman Lord Sugar ‏(@Lord_Sugar) is unsurprisingly thinking about money: “Roy Hodgson’s second win as England boss. He will be down the FA offices next week for a new contract. Mad thing is they will give him a rise.”

Norwich defender Elliott Bennett (‏@Ebenno88) believes man of the match and captain Steven Gerrard will be key to England’s chances: “Steven Gerrard going to be massive for England this tournament! Great player and thrives off being captain, bosses games.”

Manchester United defender Rio Ferdinand ‏(@rioferdy5) is feeling positive about England despite his omission: “Back in numbers and counter-attack is the ‘new’ England. I’m seeing quarter finals at least here. Hard to beat with that set-up. Pace on break.”

BBC presenter Gabby Logan ‏(@Gabby_Logan) is feeling positive too despite the no thrills football: “Two wins no goals conceded. It’s dogged but not so pretty. If England progress to a final in that style will it be satisfying?”

Former Crystal Palace striker Mark Bright (‏@Mark__Bright) can see what Hodgson’s side lacks: “Just walked out with a #cafc & Millwall fan, they said the England team lacked a Gazza. We have no spark.”

Ex-Aston Villa striker Stan Collymore ‏(@StanCollymore) is not impressed either: “Hugely disappointing. Play football to excite, create, win, entertain. Not set out not to lose and nick something.”
