Spain managed to keep alive their hopes of retaining their European crown courtesy of a nerve-wracking semi-final shootout victory over Portugal after a goalless draw.

Former Liverpool midfielder Xabi Alonso missed Spain’s first spot kick, but Iker Casillas saved Joao Moutinho’s effort, before Bruno Alves’ struck the crossbar with Portugal’s fourth attempt, allowing Cesc Fàbregas to send Spain into Sunday’s showpiece.
