David Beckham not been selected to represent Team GB at the London 2012 Olympics.

The 37-year-old LA Galaxy midfielder was expected to be named as one of the three players over the age of 23 in Stuart Pearce’s final 18-man squad.

“Everyone knows how much playing for my country has always meant to me,” Beckham told Associated Press. “So I would have been honored to have been part of this unique Team GB squad.

“Naturally I am very disappointed, but there will be no bigger supporter of the team than me. And like everyone, I will be hoping they can win the gold.”

Beckham had previously made clear his desire to captain Team GB at the London Olympics.

“I would love to be captain,” he said in January. “I have led my country before and know how special it would be to lead them into the Olympics.”

Manchester City’s Micah Richards, Liverpool’s Craig Bellamy and Manchester United’s Ryan Giggs are understood to have been picked as the three over-age players in the squad, which kicks off its campaign against Senegal at Old Trafford on 26 July.

The news will come as a blow to Locog and the British Olympic Association as they hoped Beckham’s presence would help sell the million plus football tickets still available.

However, Team GB Chef de Mission Andy Hunt tweeted that the Team GB men’s football squad had not yet been submitted, therefore suggesting the squad was not yet decided.
