Paul Lambert would be foolish to swap Norwich City for Aston Villa

What does Lambert see in Villa?

After being widely lauded for helping Norwich City back to the top flight and a comfortable mid-table finish in their first season on limited resources, Lambert should be revelling in his success at home in East Anglia.

But instead, he seems determined on damaging his managerial career by accepting the Aston Villa job.

Villa have a 42,000 all-seater stadium so they do qualify as a “big club” in terms of fan base, but most of those supporters are fed up after going trophy-less since a League Cup win in 1996.

Owner Randy Lerner has tightened the purse strings, forcing previous managers to make use of the ‘talents’ of players such as Emile Heskey and Alan Hutton, and he doesn’t look likely to hand Lambert a big budget to renew the squad.

Villa have one decent striker in the injury prone Darren Bent, and an average one in the form of Gabriel Agbonlahor.

The threadbare squad is bulked out with promising youngsters, and if Lambert thinks he can raid the lower leagues on the cheap for decent English talent he might have a nasty surprise.

Unlike Norwich, Villa has a mega-rich US owner and clubs will expect top dollar for their players.

Make a bad start to the season, and the malevolent, seething undertone among the Villa fans will rear its ugly head again and could see Lambert out by Christmas.

King is one of the league’s best defenders

After 15 years, 268 games and 10 superb goals, if the reports are to be believed, Ledley King has played his last game for Tottenham Hotspur.

King only had one knee but really was better than John Terry – he is without question the finest defender of his generation.

The mind simply boggles at the thought of what he could have achieved with Tottenham if it were not for his debilitating knee injuries.

Continuing to defy science for so long, King was still the best in the Premier League last year, albeit in a league lacking world class defenders, and we will most probably never witness a player like him for a very long time.

Thierry Henry is just one of myriad people to list King as the best defender he has played against, and in an age where loyalty in football seems extinct, it shows the humility of the man that he’s pledged to stay at Tottenham – the only club for him as he puts it.
