Brian McDermott says Danny Guthrie’s experience and passing ability were key factors behind his decision to bring the midfielder to Reading on a three-year deal, with Pavel Pogrebnyak set to complete his move by the end of next week.

Guthrie was released by Newcastle United after the midfielder fell behind Yohan Cabaye and Cheick Tiote in the pecking order at St James’ Park.

“We’re delighted Danny has signed for us,” McDermott said.

“He brings good experience at a good age, he has real ability to pass the ball, he’s got energy, he’s hungry.”

Guthrie began his career at Liverpool but failed to break into the first-team under former Reds manager Rafael Benítez. He moved to Southampton before joining Newcastle in 2008 and helping them win the Championship title two years later.

Guthrie expressed his delight at joining the newly-promoted side and underlined his desire to be part of an exciting new era at Reading.

“It feels brilliant to have signed, it is a great honour and I am very excited,” Guthrie said.

“As soon as I met the manager and Nick Hammond my mind was made up, it was a no-brainer.

“Reading Football Club is a fantastic family club, well run and I’m so excited to be part of something special for this club.”

The Royals also confirmed that striker Pogrebnyak has passed a medical at the club is now waiting to be granted a UK work permit before completing his move.

A statement on the club’s website said: “Reading Football Club has agreed terms with Pavel Pogrebnyak to join the club.

“The player has already completed a medical and the deal is now only subject to the player obtaining a UK work permit. Reading anticipate completing the signing within the next 7 days.”
