Borussia Dortmund striker Robert Lewandowski is “going to Manchester United” this summer, according to Poland manager Franciszek Smuda.

The 23-year-old was in sparkling form for Jurgen Klopp’s side last season, scoring 29 goals in their successful campaign in the Bundesliga and German Cup.

Smuda, whose Poland side face Greece in their opening European championship game on Friday, believes Lewandowski is on the verge of a move to Old Trafford, and claims his international team-mate, midfielder Jakub Blaszczykowski, is set to follow the forward to England.

“In my opinion, in a moment they will be gone from Borussia Dortmund,” Smuda said. “Lewy [Lewandowski] is going to Manchester United, Jakub also somewhere in England, Lukasz Piszczek to Real Madrid. They have a goal and they want to grow.”

Lewandowski joined Dortmund from Lech Poznan in 2010 after he netted 41 goals in 82 appearances for the Polish side, prompting the German champions to make a €4.5m (£3.6m) swoop for the forward.

Bayern Munich and Germany striker Miroslav Klose admitted he has been left impressed by Lewandowski since the forward’s move to the Bundesliga, and is backing the Poland international to continue improving.

“I have followed Lewandowski’s progress, he is a super player and in his two years with Borussia Dortmund he has developed well,” said Klose, who has scored 63 goals for Germany in 116 appearances.

“He can still add another dimension to his play. I know how hard it is to score 22 goals in the Bundesliga, so I have tremendous respect for him.”
