Marsh, Ferdinand & more: Twitter reacts to Kelly’s England call-up
Gary Cahill is ruled out of Euro 2012 with a fractured jaw and Martin Kelly replaces him, causing a reaction on Twitter
Roy Hodgson drafted Liverpool’s Martin Kelly into his Euro 2012 squad after Chelsea defender Gary Cahill was ruled of the tournament with a double jaw fracture on Sunday.
The 22-year-old’s call-up received a mixed reaction on Twitter, with many questioning the former Fulham manager’s decision to overlook Rio Ferdinand and Micah Richards.
Manchester United defender Rio Ferdinand (@rioferdy5) alludes to Roy Hodgson’s “football reasons” behind the defender’s omission for Euro 2012: “What reasons?????!!!”
Former England striker Gary Lineker (@GaryLineker): “Micah Richards only has himself to blame for refusing to be on standby. But @rioferdy5 omission reasons now more obvious than ever. Nothing against Martin Kelly by the way. He’s a very good player who will continue to improve. Wish him well.”
Southampton legend Matt Le Tissier (@mattletiss7) is amused by the strong Liverpool presence in the squad: “Martin Kelly in for Gary Cahill!!!!! Jay Spearing must wonder what he’s got to do to get a call up! :-)”
Former Liverpool striker Stan Collymore (@StanCollymore) breaks down the argument for Kelly and Micah Richards’ inclusion and Ferdinand’s exclusion: “Can see the logic of either Richards(should be in) or Kelly. Both play a right-back or centre-half. Options. Three reasons why Ferdinand isn’t in: 1. Can play one position 2. Might not be fit to play required games 3.He fell out with John Terry #truth”
Norwich City midfielder Elliott Bennett (@Ebenno88) believes Richards should be called up: “Can’t believe Gary Cahill now out as well. Surely Micah Richards will get a call up to the squad??
…and after hearing of Kelly’s inclusion, adds: “Fair play to Martin Kelly. Good to see lads from the Under-21’s get a chance in the 1st team. I didn’t realise Micah Richards was still that young. We are all the best managers in our heads, I’m sure whoever goes will give 100%!”
Norwich City defender Ryan Bennett (@Ryan_Bennett4) also backs Kelly’s call-up: “Good to see young lads getting called into the euros!”
Manchester United youngster Scott Wootton (@ScottyJW91) can’t believe Richards has been overlooked: “What has Micah Richards done to England?”
Ex-Manchester City star Rodney Marsh (@RodneyMarsh10) is unhappy with Hodgson’s decision: “It’s absolutely ridiculous that Micah Richards is not in this English squad #sorryroy”
Michael John (@Mike__John) is delighted for Liverpool’s Kelly: “Made up for Martin Kelly but needs to prove he deserves to be there if he plays any part of the Euros though.”
David Hall (@davidbigshothal) asks why Ferdinand has been omitted: “Cahill ruled out of Euro 2012 with a double jaw fracture. And Hodgson calls up Martin Kelly. What’s wrong with Rio Ferdinand?”
And Jamie Pritchard (@jammyp8) adds: “What is up with Hodgson putting Martin Kelly in over @rioferdy5 and Micah Richards!!!! Slightly biased towards Liverpool I think!!!!!”
But Tom Goddard (@GodlyT) can see Hodgson’s long-term plan materialising: “It’s a shame Gary Cahill is out of the Euros, Martin Kelly will do well. You can see Roy’s trying to prepare the young Lions for the future.”
While Euan Archibald @Euan95 Tweets with a hint of sarcasm: “Martin Kelly started just 12 league games for the eighth best team in England. But is obviously better than Richards and Ferdinand.”
However, Sean Baines (@TheTunechi) believes Michael Carrick and Richards only have themselves to blame after refusing to be on the stand-by list: “So Micah Richards and Michael Carrick could have played in the Euros, shame they were too stuck up! Good on Jordan Henderson and Kelly!”
Andy Smart (@AndySmart88) can’t make sense of the decision: “How has Kelly who’s a good player but can’t get into the eighth best team in the Premier League be ahead of Micah Richards who starred for the best team?”
