Wayne Rooney believes Manchester United have “learned a lot” from the disappointment of losing the Premier League title to derby rivals City in May.

The 26-year-old scored the winner in United’s final game against Sunderland and Sir Alex Ferguson’s side looked set to win their 20th top-flight crown.

But Manchester City overturned Queens Park Rangers 2-1 lead courtesy of goals from Edin Dzeko and Sergio Aguero in added time to end their 44-year wait to win England’s top prize.

Rooney, who netted 27 goals in 37 league appearances, admitted the manner in which the Old Trafford outfit lost their grip on the trophy was difficult to accept.

“I think we’ve all learned a lot,” Rooney told United’s website.

“There have been a lot of games where you get a feeling afterwards that you never want to have again, and hopefully we can get hold of that feeling and make sure it doesn’t happen again.”

Rooney, who was part of Roy Hodgson’s England squad at Euro 2012, is optimistic about United’s future and pointed to the fresh talent coming through at Old Trafford, including Danny Welbeck, who started every Three Lions game at the European championship.

“Just look at all the young players in the squad: they’ve played a lot of games, had a lot of ups and downs and most of them are already getting selected now for their national teams,” he added.

“That’s all going to help them. The next two or three years will be a big test for them and I’m sure we’ll all pull through it.”
