West Ham’s Rob Green would be a top signing on a free transfer

Sharethematch.com looks at some of the top free agents available to top-flight clubs this summer, including Rob Green

As much stick as Rob Green has received in the years since his World Cup howler, is there a better free agent on the market?

There are a few names knocking about that could make a team very happy for the minimum price – and Green is right up there.

There is Michael Owen, Ivan Klasnic, Pavel Pogrebnyak, Louis Saha and Owen Hargreaves to name a few, but Green might just be the pick of the bunch.

Owen, Hargreaves and Saha will most likely not make it through the season unscathed, Pogrebnyak began wonderfully for Fulham but petered out and Klasnic has never scored regularly.

But Green has barely missed a game in seven years and for the most part has been a pretty solid top-flight goalkeeper.

Yes, we all remember what happened against the USA but he was also England’s No1 for a fair few years and generally did as well as Paul Robinson did.

West Ham United might not feel too upset to lose him because of the air of failure that surrounds the shot-stopper after what happened in South Africa, and with Jussi Jaaskelainen reportedly set to come in, perhaps they won’t feel the hit.

As long as a club fancies offering him the wages, Green could well recapture the form which made him such a success at Norwich City and the Hammers.

It could be good for all parties as Green can start afresh at a new club and West Ham can plod on with another Big Sam lieutenant.
