Alan Pardew: Andy Carroll’s possible return to Newcastle out of my hands

Newcastle manager Alan Pardew says Mike Ashley is key to the club's bid to lure Andy Carroll back to St James' Park

Alan Pardew has hinted Newcastle United’s attempts to bring Liverpool striker Andy Carroll back to St James’ Park hinge on Magpies owner Mike Ashley.

The Reds rejected an enquiry from Newcastle on Monday over the possibility of signing the England international on a season-long loan deal with a view to a permanent deal.

Carroll has managed just 11 goals in 56 appearances for the 18-time English champions after completing a British record £35m move from Newcastle to Anfield in January 2011.

However, Kenny Dalglish’s dismissal at the end of the season and Brendan Rodgers’ subsequent appointment has cast doubt over the future of the 23-year-old striker at the Merseyside outfit.

Pardew revealed Carroll is “available” but the 50-year-old is leaving any potential deal in the hands of Ashley, with Newcastle currently based in Germany as part of their pre-season tour.

“That whole process is a little bit more involved with the chairman and the board at Liverpool. We have got a great team here, a great squad, and if Andy Carroll comes, it will only add to us,” Pardew told the Evening Chronicle.

“It’s simple, really. Sometimes transfers are done at corporate level. I’m slightly detached from that. It will be what it will be.

“It’s been said that he’s available and if we are involved, then we will be involved because of the figures, not anything else, because we know he’s good enough.”

Carroll made his debut for Newcastle in a 1-0 victory over Palermo in the Uefa Cup in 2006 aged 17 and went on to score 33 goals in 91 appearances before joining Liverpool.
