Joe Cole believes Italy international Fabio Borini can be a “very big player” for Liverpool this season.

The 21-year-old scored nine goals in 24 appearances for Roma last season before completing a reported £10.5m switch to Anfield in July.

Cole watched Borini come through the youth ranks at Chelsea, and the former West Ham United playmaker is confident the Italian striker can be a success on Merseyside.

“I know Fabio from my Chelsea days when he was a young player coming through,” Cole told Liverpool’s website.

“He has got a lot of talent and a lot of ability, and I think he’s described himself perfectly when he said he’s a fighter and plays with plenty of hustle and bustle.

“He’s got an eye for a goal and he could be a very big player for us this season. He’s good, young, and hungry – we’re delighted to have signed him.”

Brendan Rodgers, who replaced Kenny Dalglish as Liverpool manager in May, saw the Reds suffer a 2-1 defeat by Roma in their second pre-season friendly in the United States, but Cole insisted there are plenty of positives to take from the match at Boston Red Sox’s Fenway Park.

“The game against Roma was a good test for us,” added Cole. “I don’t think we deserved to lose. On the balance of play, a draw would have been a fair result.

“The manager was really pleased considering we had a lot of young players and Roma are five or six games ahead of us which is massive at this time of the season.

“So overall, tactically we were good, physically we got a lot out of it and it was a good performance.”
