Galatasaray are interested in signing Manchester United’s out-of-favour striker Dimitar Berbatov, according to the club’s president.

The 31-year-old has scored 56 goals in 149 appearances for the Red Devils since completing a £30.75m move from Tottenham Hotspur to Old Trafford in August 2008.

The Bulgaria international has won two Premier League titles and the FA Cup once at United, but has fallen down the pecking order behind Wayne Rooney, Javier Hernández and Danny Welbeck in recent seasons.

Berbatov started just five Premier League games for Sir Alex Ferguson’s side last term, and despite United taking up an option to extend his contract, reports continue to suggest Berbatov is set to leave the 19-time English champions this summer.

Galatasaray are one of the clubs linked with the Red Devils striker, and the club’s president, Unal Aysal, has admitted the Turkish champions are interested in bringing Berbatov to the Türk Telekom Arena.

“The Bulgarian is a great forward,” Galatasaray president Aysal is quoted as saying by gol.bg. “I want him to join us but, of course, coach Fatih Terim has the final word.”

United confirmed last week that former England international Michael Owen had been released by the club, leaving Ferguson short on attacking cover for the start of the Premier League in August.

“It is a pleasure to have had Michael at Manchester United. Michael is a consummate professional and was an influential figure in our dressing room. Unfortunately he had no luck with his injury this season,” said Ferguson.

“Michael’s record of goals per game is exceptional and we wish him all the best for the future.”
