Gylfi Sigurdsson has revealed he chose to join Tottenham Hotspur ahead of Liverpool because of the London club’s “great ambition”.

The Icelandic midfielder, who spent the second half last season on loan to Swansea City, had been linked with a move to Anfield to work under former Swans boss Brendan Rodgers.

But the 22-year-old penned a deal with Spurs the day after Andre Villas-Boas was appointed as Harry Redknapp’s successor at White Hart Lane.

And Sigurdsson, whose move from Hoffenheim is reported to be worth £8m, admits he was left impressed by the Portuguese coach and believes he has made the right decision in joining the Londoners.

“I like him and the ideas he has. He has faith in me and I’m looking forward to working under his leadership,” Sigurdsson told Icelandic website mbl.is.

“I enjoyed playing under Brendan and I am grateful for everything he has done for me, but after careful consideration I liked Spurs best. The team has world-class players in their ranks and they play good football, which I like.

“I was impressed with the club’s plans for next season and the coming years. There is clearly great ambition at Tottenham and the club intends to do big things.

“It is a pleasure to see that Gareth Bale has signed a new contract. There are top players in the team and the club is getting a new training ground.”

Sigurdsson rose to prominence in the Premier League after he scored seven goals in 18 appearances for Swansea during his loan spell at the Liberty Stadium.
