Lewis Hamilton topped the timesheets in both practice sessions as the McLaren driver set the pace for Sunday’s Hungarian Grand Prix in Budapest.

Hamilton was quickest in the first session from McLaren team-mate Jenson Button and set the pace in the afternoon ahead of Lotus’s Kimi Raikkonen.

“It’s been a real positive day for me, I’m very happy,” said Hamilton after the second practice session, which was disrupted by a rain shower.

“We made some good changes to the car to get it dialled in, and we’re on the right path, but we’ve still got some work to do.

“The Red Bull looks very quick, so does the Lotus, and obviously the Ferrari as well. So we’re by no means feeling comfortable, we’re going to keep pushing.

“I feel good in the car but practice is completely different to qualifying. Tomorrow when we get into qualifying I have no doubts that Fernando [Alonso] will all of a sudden find half a second and the Red Bulls will have of a sudden find a chunk of time.”

Hamilton will be looking to carry Friday’s pace into qualifying as the 27-year-old aims to claw back some of the 62-point gap between himself and championship-leader Fernando Alonso with a solid result in Budapest.

Alonso was fifth-quickest over the two sessions, behind Williams’ Bruno Senna and Ferrari team-mate Felipe Massa. Button ended up sixth-quickest.

Defending world champion Sebastian Vettel was eighth-quickest overall, with his Red Bull team-mate Mark Webber back in 16th.
