West Ham United have reportedly made a £17m bid for Liverpool striker Andy Carroll – an offer that would break the Hammers’ transfer record.

The London outfit’s bid for the 23-year-old, who has scored 11 goals in 56 appearances since moving in a £35m deal from Newcastle to the Reds in January 2011, would see the England striker move to Upton Park on loan next season, with a commitment to buy the 23-year-old next summer.

The Hammers’ offer for Carroll received a mixed reaction on Twitter, with Liverpool fans generally keen to keep the forward, while West Ham supporters urged Sam Allardyce to spend his transfer budget wisely.

Here are some of the Tweets that caught our eye.

Bryan Boshoff ‏(@BryanLFC) wants Liverpool to show Carroll some loyalty: “Andy Carroll is showing #LFC loyalty by insisting he wants to stay at the club. Return the favour! Loyalty in football is very rare #keepandy!”

While Omar Altoubah ‏(@OmarAltoubah) reckons Liverpool should sell Carroll rather than prolonging his spell at Anfield: “If Liverpool don’t want Andy Carroll, they must sell him not loan him. Loaning him will kill his confidence. #lfc”

Ronan Shiers ‏(@Ronanshiers) is not happy with West Ham’s offer but wants Liverpool to accept and launch a bid for Gastón Ramírez: “£17m for Andy Carroll is not enough, but if it means getting Gaston Ramirez from Bologna then it is worth it – more money would be nice though!”

Marc Braterman ‏(@marcbraterman) thinks Carroll’s proposed move to West Ham would work for every party: “Andy Carroll to West Ham will suit all parties (dependant on fee). He won’t suit Rodgers style at Liverpool and Big Sam will get best from him!”

However, Charlie Kelly (‏@CKelly_92) advises Liverpool that £17m would be great value: “Liverpool turn down a £17m bid from West Ham for Andy Carroll – get a grip!”

But Stefan Evans ‏(@ROFLcopterEvo) is desperate for Carroll to stay at Liverpool: “Sick of all these Andy Carroll rumours! I don’t want him to go but if he is, just get it over and done with!”

JJ Lfc ‏(@JJtoLFC) would prefer Carroll go to the Hammers than Newcastle: “I’d rather Andy Carroll go to West Ham than Newcastle just because of what Pardew said!”

Emir Ashraff ‏(@EmirAshraff) is excited by the prospect of Carroll and Kevin Nolan linking up at West Ham: “Andy Carroll could re-united with Kevin Nolan after West Ham make a stunning £17m bid to Liverpool. Really miss that duo at St James’ Park!”

However, Lewis Keeble ‏(@LewThrewPoo) wants Chelsea to make a bid for Carroll: “I wish Chelsea would go for Andy Carroll. He could be the new Drogba with good coaching – mock me if you will. I think he would be great!”

While Lee London ‏(@McKenna_23) defends Queens Park Rangers’ transfer policy this summer: “QPR buy a few players for £3/4m and everyone complains they’re big spenders. West Ham have offered £17mil for Andy Carroll..”

And Tony Joseph ‏(@tonyj100) would rather spend £18m on three players: “Odd transfer market strategy by #westham. I would rather have three quality £4-5m players than just Andy Carroll. And is he best £17m striker available?”

Finally, Arsenal fan Femi daGooner (‏@coderxo) reckons there is more to come from Carroll: “Andy Carroll is nowhere near a finished product but he scores goals. He is a Premier League player no doubt. I like this move from #whfc #lfc!”
