Charlie Adam’s agent has leapt to the defence of the Liverpool midfielder after Tottenham’s Gareth Bale branded the Scotland international a “coward”.

Bale, whose injury is not as serious as first feared, was forced to wear a protective cast on his left ankle after Adam’s reckless challenge on the winger in a goalless draw between Liverpool and Spurs in a pre-season friendly on Saturday.

Tottenham manager Andre Villas-Boas and Bale both criticised Adam for the tackle, but the Liverpool star’s agent Kenny Moyles insisted his client is not a malicious player

“It doesn’t warrant a reply because everyone knows Charlie is not that type of player. Everyone in football knows he has no malice or anything like that in him,” Moyles told the Daily Star.

“For someone to have a go like that is outrageous. It was schoolboyish for them to come out and say that.”

Bale was particularly angered by the midfielder’s latest tackle after Adam injured Bale during Blackpool’s trip to White Hart Lane in 2011, resulting in the winger missing three months due to ankle ligament damage.

“He’s a bit of a coward,” Bale told the Daily Mail. “It’s flattering if players try to take you out in a game but when it threatens your career it becomes more serious.

“What he did was over the top. Some people are like that and it’s just wrong.

“There are pictures on the internet of what he did before when he snapped all my ankle ligaments. I was out for three months that time. He’s come for me twice now – and he’s got me twice.

“When someone makes a very bad tackle on you, you expect an apology. I’ve had no apology. And I’m not going to accept his apology.”
