Luka Modrić has reportedly agreed personal terms ahead of a proposed move to Real Madrid from Tottenham Hotspur, with the Croatia international said to be set to sign a four-year deal at the Bernabeu if the La Liga champions can agree a fee for the playmaker.

The 26-year-old has scored 17 goals in 159 appearances for Spurs after moving from Dinamo Zagreb in 2008, and news of his possible departure prompted a mixed response from Tottenham supporters and other fans alike.

Here are some of the Tweets that caught our eye.

Spurs fan Matt Swan (‏@Matt_swan40) is resigned to losing Modrić: “Modrić was always going to leave this summer. Thanks for the memories Luka. Sensational player. Not sure how he splits fans opinion so much.”

Arsenal supporter Dave Newman ‏(@View10) reckons Gylfi Sigurdsson will be better than Modrić: “Luka Modrić to Real Madrid – Sigurdsson is a better player. Wish Arsenal would try to get an equal or better Robin van Persie replacement.”

Nathan Worrall ‏(@NWorrall1994) agrees: “Luka Modrić looks certain to go to Madrid. Sigurdsson his replacement then…”

Mike Kane (‏@MickeyKane) really rates Modrić – to the extreme: “Luka Modrić is amazing. Johan Cruyff reincarnate. Anyone who doesn’t agree is a void human being to me.”

But Zach (‏@zachytanny) is rather more bitter about the move: “So, Luka Modrić heading to Real Madrid? Hope you warm the bench there.”

Manchester United fan Deran ‏(@Suwagz) would love to see Modrić at Old Trafford: “I think Man United would be the perfect club for Luka Modrić. That is the creativity we lacked last season.”

Chelsea fan Zandie Thornton ‏(@Zandie182) is disappointed Modrić won’t be moving to Stamford Bridge: “Looks like Luka Modrić is off to Real Madrid. Big loss for #Chelsea and a huge loss for the Premier League.”

However, Batoul Hussein ‏(@BatoulHussein) is happy with the other midfield options Roberto Di Matteo has got: “Luka Modrić to Real Madrid? Damn it. But anyway, we got Eden Hazard and Marko Marin. #cfc”

Spurs fan Nathan ‏(@OutSideTheArea) hopes their might be a player exchange involved: “Luka Modrić to #RMCF between 15th and 17th July apparently. Real are struggling to find new clubs for Lass Diarra or Kaka. Could maybe get Lass #THFC!”

Chub Molony (‏@ChubMolony) is eyeing Gonzalo Higuain: “Sad to see Luka Modrić is off to Madrid. Love to see Higuain and some cash coming our way!”

However, Arsenal fan Daniel Marsh ‏(@danmaruk) is enjoying the moment after a difficult few days at The Emirates: “They laughed at Robin van Persie but today is a new day my Tottenham friends! Bye bye Luka Modrić!”

But Tom Sorbie ‏(@TomSorbie) is key to point out the difference between both possible departures: “The difference between ‪#Spurs‬ and ‪#Arsenal‬…… Modrić isn’t Tottenham. Van Persie is Arsenal! ‪#OneManTeam‬”

Finally, @HotspurYids is rather philosophical: “Modrić can go if he wants. I mean we made Luka, and no player is bigger than the club. He should keep in mind, that he is famous because of our shirt. On the other hand good luck to him.”
