Man United’s Nemanja Vidic set to be fit for start of the season

Manchester United boss Sir Alex Ferguson reveals captain Nemanja Vidic should be fit for the start of the new season

Sir Alex Ferguson has revealed that Manchester United captain Nemanja Vidic should be fit for the start of the new season.

The Serb, who suffered a season-ending knee injury in December, has not travelled with United for their pre-season tour but Ferguson is hoping the centre-half will be close to full fitness when the Red Devils return to England.

“Vidic will start the season, I am sure of that,” said Ferguson. “He is still at the level of doing good amounts of training but not in the competitive sense that the others have done so it was pointless bringing him out here.

“He is better being back at Carrington, with all the facilities and the physios to get him to the next level. By the time we get back, we hope he is at the competitive element of his comeback.”

Ferguson also said that he expects defender Chris Smalling to be ready for the start of the new campaign as he continues his recovery from a groin problem.

“Chris Smalling has done a bit of training,” he added. “The ruptured groin muscle he had certainly needed a lot of attention. He is gradually progressing and I expect him to start the season.”

But Jonny Evans, who has undergone an ankle operation during the summer, is unlikely to be available for their first league game against Everton. “Jonny has had an operation,” added Ferguson. “I am not sure he will start the season but he won’t be far away.”
