Manchester United new boy Nick Powell impresses Rio Ferdinand
Rio Ferdinand says Nick Powell is good prospect for the future as the forward takes part in Manchester United's pre-season tour
Rio Ferdinand admits he is excited about Nick Powell’s future at Old Trafford as the Red Devils new boy takes part in Manchester United’s pre-season tour.
The 18-year-old joined United from Crewe Alexandra on 1 July after scoring 14 goals in 38 appearances for Dario Gradi’s side in League Two last season.
“I think he’s a fine young prospect,” said Ferdinand. “I’ve seen a few clips of him and obviously watched a few games back home, and he’s got a little bit of an unpredictable style and can play off the cuff.
“He’ll play one-twos at times and then other times he’ll pull something out of the hat that you didn’t expect to come out.
“We’ve not really been able to see as much as we would like in training because we do a lot of short stuff.
“But he’s got a great touch. He’s not afraid – he seems like a confident lad. He’s integrated straight into the squad.
“For a young lad to come into an environment like Manchester United from a lower league club, you have to say, he’s walked in like he’s meant to be here. I think that’s a great start to any career.”
Meanwhile, Sir Alex Ferguson described United’s pre-season tour of South Africa as a chance for Powell, Shinji Kagawa and the club’s other promising youngsters to impress ahead of the new season.
“We’ve got Ferdinand, [Antonio] Valencia, our new signings Kagawa and Powell are all here,” said Ferguson.
“It’s an opportunity to see some young potential at the football club which is coming through as we always have done over the years. So we won’t be treating [pre-season] lightly and we never do.”
