Mathieu Debuchy wants to join Newcastle, says Yohan Cabaye
Yohan Cabaye is hoping Newcastle United can complete the signing of Mathieu Debuchy, who is keen to leave Lille
Yohan Cabaye claims Lille defender Mathieu Debuchy is desperate to join Newcastle United this summer.
The 26-year-old France right-back was in impressive form for Laurent Blanc’s side at Euro 2012, prompting interest from a host of European clubs.
Alan Pardew has enjoyed great success recruiting players from Ligue 1 in recent seasons, including Cabaye, and the French midfielder hopes his compatriot will complete a move to St James’ Park this summer.
“Mathieu has made a very difficult to decision to leave Lille, but he has made the decision. Now I hope Newcastle push for Mathieu and I want them to do the deal,” Cabaye told The Journal.
“I spoke with him two days ago and he told me he wants to come. I hope Derek Llambias and [owner] Mike Ashley will do the business now.
“He wants to play for Newcastle and I hope that he comes to Newcastle because, of course, he is my friend, but also a very good player for Newcastle.”
Lille manager Rudi Garcia confirmed in June that the Ligue 1 outfit had rejected a £4m bid from Newcastle for the right-back.
However, Debuchy emphasised his desire to quit Lille earlier this month, with Serie A’s Internazionale also showing interest in the Les Bleus star.
“That is my priority [to join Newcaslte], although Inter also enquired about me,” Debuchy told L’Equipe.
“I am committed 100 per cent to the fact I want to leave Lille, I want to discover another championship.
“The coach wants to keep me and I will not change his mind, but I will do everything I can to move elsewhere.”
Debuchy has scored 17 goals in 288 appearances for the Ligue 1 outfit and won the French league and cup double with Lille in 2011.
