Robert Pires has encouraged Newcastle United target Mathieu Debuchy to move to the Premier League to continue his development.

The 26-year-old impressed as part of Laurent Blanc’s France side which reached the quarter-finals of the European championship before being knocked out by eventual winners Spain.

Debuchy has scored 17 goals in 288 appearances for Lille, winning Ligue 1 in 2011, and the right-back has been linked with a move to Newcastle United in recent weeks.

“He has a game which really suits the Premier League with his speed. He also has such an attacking game, but is very aggressive in defence,” Pires told Le 10 Sport.

“If I have any advice to give him, it would be to try his luck in England.”

Pires scored 84 goals in 284 appearances for Arsenal and won two Premier League titles and the FA Cup three times after moving from Marseille to north London in 2000.

The 38-year-old believes Debuchy can blossom in the English top flight and earmarked Newcastle as the ideal location for the Lille full-back, given the current crop of French players at St James’ Park.

“It does not really surprise me that English clubs are interested in him. Newcastle would be a very good club for him because he would find his friends [Yohan] Cabaye and Hatem Ben Arfa,” he added.

“Also, they are one of the top English clubs, with a history and a beautiful stadium. For him and the rest of his career, they would be a nice stepping stone.”
