Petr Cech: Things will be different for Andre Villas-Boas at Tottenham
Petr Cech is convinced former Chelsea manager Andre Villas-Boas will be a success at Tottenham Hotspur
Petr Cech has backed former Chelsea manager Andre Villas-Boas to be a success at Tottenham Hotspur.
The 34-year-old made his return to the Premier League after he was appointed as Harry Redknapp’s successor at White Hart Lane earlier this month on a three-year deal.
Villas-Boas was sacked by Chelsea in March with the Blues on the verge of elimination from the Champions League and struggling in the race for a fourth-place finish in the Premier League.
“No [it wasn’t a surprise to see Villas-Boas return to management], because Andre showed he is a great manager before he came to us, that is why the club brought him in,” Cech told the Independent.
“We were doing the right things on the training ground but we were not able to transfer this into games.
“It became an issue because we were not able to find the reasons for that, but I believe he will have a different story with Spurs.”
Cech also emphasised the importance of Chelsea finding the right balance between youth and experience as Roberto Di Matteo prepares for his first full season in charge at Stamford Bridge.
The 42-year-old replaced Villas-Boas in the Chelsea hot-seat on a temporary basis and led the Blues to a Champions League and FA Cup double, before being appointed as the west Londoners’ full-time coach at the end of the season.
“It is important for a team to have new players, young players and experienced players,” Cech added. “I hope we find the right balance to go through the season and have success.
“If you have the coach of the team who wins the Champions League and the FA Cup you expect that to happen. That is good as all the players know what to expect from the manager already. We don’t start from zero.”
