Van Persie would never be taken to United hearts

Manchester United are reportedly “winning the race” to sign Robin van Persie from Arsenal this summer – but if this is the case then Red Devils supporters may be far from delighted.

While the Dutchman’s goal haul last season was phenomenal, you cannot help but feel his presence would severely hinder the progress of Danny Welbeck and Javier Hernández.

It makes to sense to back the young duo because they are dedicated United players through and through whereas Van Persie will always be associated with Arsenal.

He would never have that same connection with the Old Trafford faithful that someone like Welbeck does.

Every time he scores you can see the pure delight in his eyes as he wheels away, you know that he dreamt of doing this very thing as a youngster when he was having kickarounds on the streets of Longsight with Wes Brown.

It is similar with Hernández – United plucked him from Mexico and made him a star, and for many Red Devils supporters that is always more enjoyable than buying them.

There are also far more pressing gaps to be filled in the squad – a left-back for starters but most importantly that elusive central midfielder United have been in dire need of for years.

Tottenham playing with fire over Modrić price

Tottenham Hotspur are in grave danger of allowing history to repeat itself this summer – and it could cost them dearly in the opening stages of the season.

In 2008, chairman Daniel Levy refused to sell Dimitar Berbatov until Manchester United finally met his asking price, just hours before the transfer window slammed shut.

Panic ensued, Roman Pavlyuchenko was snapped up to fill in for Robbie Keane but a worthy replacement for the Bulgarian was not found in time despite ludicrous rumours of bids for Falcao, David Villa and Diego Forlan.

It affected the balance of the side enough to cost Juande Ramos his job after taking just two points from the opening eight matches and Spurs are playing with fire again with Luka Modrić.

Levy must be lauded for sticking to his principles, and for refusing to sell him to another Premier League club, but there comes a time when his stubbornness over a million here or two million there harms the side.

Tottenham have picked up Gylfi Sigurdsson and Jan Vertonghen and are attempting to get Emmanuel Adebayor on a permanent deal but they will not spend big until Modric has left.

And if it is left to the 11th hour his replacement will most likely be overpriced or sub-standard.
