Tottenham’s Andre Villas-Boas: I’ve learnt from Chelsea ‘mistakes’

Tottenham boss Andre Villas-Boas says he has learnt from the "mistakes" he made during his doomed spell in charge of Chelsea

Andre Villas-Boas insists he has learnt from the “mistakes” he made at Chelsea as he embarks on his new project at Tottenham Hotspur.

The Portuguese coach was sacked after nine months in charge at Stamford Bridge, with the Blues’ title challenge in tatters after a disappointing slump in form.

Villas-Boas, who has been brought at to White Hart Lane as Harry Redknapp’s successor, says he will never accept Roman Abramovich’s decision to terminate his contract and refused to have the blame for Chelsea’s failures place solely on him.

“The squad was being put in place for the future,” Villas-Boas said. “The owner took the decision, which I have to respect but I will never accept, and decided to terminate the contract. It’s never a one-person failure and I will never take it like that.

“There are mistakes that I’ve made that I’ve learnt [from] but the decision to terminate the project was not mine. It was the decision from the owner of Chelsea football club.

“I think you always learn from experience. The Chelsea experience was maybe not so gratifying in terms of success but it was very gratifying professionally for me.

“I’ve learnt a couple of things I’ve maybe done wrong and I’ve learnt that in a club you have to trust the right people at the right time.

“That’s why I was always very meticulous [about] this next step. This gathering with Tottenham gives me even more stability towards the future.”
