Tottenham won’t sell Modrić without having a replacement, says Friedel
Brad Friedel says Tottenham Hotspur will not sell Luka Modrić without having a replacement for the Croatian lined up
Brad Friedel believes Tottenham Hotspur will not allow Real Madrid target Luka Modrić to leave White Hart Lane until the club have a replacement for the Croatian lined up.
The 26-year-old playmaker has scored 17 goals in 159 appearances for Spurs since joining the north London outfit form Dinamo Zagreb in a £16.5m deal in 2008.
Chelsea attempted to prise the midfielder from Tottenham last summer, and Madrid are currently pursuing Modrić to further bolster Jose Mourinho’s squad.
However, Spurs goalkeeper Friedel does not expect Modrić to be allowed to join the La Liga champions or any other club unless chairman Daniel Levy and manager Andre Villas-Boas have identified a suitable candidate to fill the void left by the Croatian.
“Knowing the way the chairman works, if someone like Luka Modrić left the club, then they would have a ready-made replacement.” Friedel told talkSPORT.
“I can’t see with the ambition that the club has that they can let players leave without having a replacement. We’re not a selling club – that’s for sure.”
The 41-year-old has also been leftimpressed by Villas-Boas, who replaced Harry Redknapp as Tottenham’s manager earlier in June.
“You can only take people on what you see, and from what I have seen he is a very ambitious manager, he is very organised and training has been very sharp,” he added.
“He has let us know he wants to come here to win things, so in the first couple of days, everything looks very good.”
