Tottenham Hotspur have finally competed the signing of Emmanuel Adebayor on a permanent transfer from Manchester City for a reported £5m fee.

The move comes after months of speculation linking the 28-year-old Togo striker with a switch to White Hart Lane following his successful loan stint in north London last term.

Confirmation of the deal on Tuesday evening inevitably prompted a huge reaction from fans on Twitter – and here are some of the Tweets that caught our eye.

Man City Online ‏(@ManCityOnlineco) reckons the deal shows City’s strength in depth: “So Adebayor completes his move to Spurs, shows what talent we already have at #mcfc to be able to let him go.”

Richard Dumbill ‏(@Rich1903) is hoping the move will now see Jermain Defoe join Aston Villa: “Hopefully Adebayor to Spurs means #AVFC can push through a deal for Defoe and then think about Kenwyne Jones.”

Emma Trainis ‏(@emmatrainis) is pleased with the deal but sad that Michael Dawson appears to be on the verge of joining QPR: “Delighted about Adebayor, sad to see Dawson go through #COYS”

Tottenham fan Jon Marks ‏(@Marks_Jon) is still not convinced by Spurs chairman Daniel Levy’s transfer dealings this summer: “So, some relief that Adebayor gets us back to where we were. Don’t see evidence of smart moves yet by Levy. Dawson is a leader & corner stone.”

Daniel Read ‏(@daniireadd) compares the fee Liverpool paid for Fabio Borini to the amount for the Togo striker: “Borini £15m, Adebayor £5m. Awkward.”

Liverpool fan RedToTheCore ‏(@RodgersRedmen) is hoping the transfer means the Reds could now be in with a better chance of signing Leandro Damiao: “Can’t see Spurs going for Damiao now they’ve signed Adebayor. Worth a shout for LFC?”

Ed Hawkins (@EHawk75) now wants Levy to focus on resolving the seemingly never-ending Luka Modric transfer saga: “It’s about time Adebayor deal got done…Spurs fans should feel a lil’ more at ease. Onto Modric. Either keep him or dump & grab Hulk. #BPL”

Lanre ‘Seun Asiwaju ‏(@lenin4real) questions City’s dealings: “Emmanuel Adebayor joins Tottenham from Man City after just 3 years for £5m..City bought him for £25m though. Bad Business if you ask me.”

Spurs fan Doug Waight ‏(@Grumpydoug75) is not very enthused by news of the deal: “Adebayor was 1 of our best players last season, but I can’t say I’m excited about him signing for us. Hope he changes my mind. #coys”

Matt Lee ‏(@mrmattylee) reckons Spurs still need to strengthen: “Adebayor to Tottenham is a good move, if they get Llorente too then that’s a great strike force… They’re gonna need a CM too.”

And Adebayor (‏@Sheyiadebayor) himself has the final say: “I’m back!!!! Tottenham here I come!! I’m hungry for goals…Get ready.”
