Thomas Vermaelen looks likely to be named as Arsenal’s new captain after Manchester United had a £24m bid for Robin van Persie accepted on Thuesday.

The 26-year-old has been a mainstay of Arsene Wenger’s defence since moving to The Emirates in 2009, and Gunners supporters backed Vermaelen to excel as the club’s new skipper on Twitter.

Here are some of the Tweets that caught our eye.

Paul Newman (‏@Jaynen6Paul) believes Vermaelen can emulate another great Arsenal skipper: “Vermaelen as captain for me will lead by example. Like to think he could be the new Tony Adams.”

And Danny Will ‏(DannyWillSays) reckons Vermaelen has earned the Arsenal armband: “Thomas Vermaelen – long overdue for the armband. Wear it proud!”

Raj (‏@alligatorbl0od) would be delighted for the Belgian to get the armband: “I’m happy for Vermaelen, nothing but respect for him, he’s a tank.”

Adam Hillman ‏(@AdamHillmanAFC) would back the decision: “I have absolutely no problems at all with Thomas Vermaelen being named as #Arsenal’s new captain. A warrior. A loyal warrior.”

But Lyndah Limo ‏(@Limo29sport) believes Jack Wilshere should get the nod when he returns from injury: “I would have given the armband to Wilshere if he was fit – a true leader. Vocal, etc. But Vermaelen is fantastic!”

Dave (‏@d_celebicanin) fears it could be bad news for Arsenal fans: “Vermaelen is the new #AFC captain, bet someone is preparing a bid for him next summer, would be hilarious!”

And Cameron Brennan ‏(@CameroonBrennan) also alludes to ‘the captain curse’: “Thomas Vermaelen will be captain for Arsenal which means he will be sold in the next two seasons #afc!”

And David Venables ‏(@DavidVenables1) believes Wenger would have been wise to appoint Carl Jenkinson: “If I was Arsene Wenger, I’d make Carl Jenkinson my captain rather than Thomas Vermaelen. #captaincurse!”

But Jane Emily Suiskens ‏(@Infinityx17) believes Vermaelen will display more loyalty than Van Persie: “I think Vermaelen will show HOW loyal a captain SHOULD be at a club. He won’t abandon us.”

Gowtham (‏@TheGoonArmy) believes Arsenal’s rivals should be afraid: “We all know who our next captain is. No doubt, it is Thomas Vermaelen. Prepare to be Verminated.”

Rebecca Jill Smith (‏@RebeccaJill13) speaks openly to Van Persie: “So @Persie_Official I won’t think about you anymore. You’ve disappointed me and Thomas Vermaelen at Arsenal. That is all.”

Finally, Manchester United fan Ramsin Isaac ‏(@Ramsinisaac) is already eyeing a bid for the soon-to-be Arsenal captain: “Vermaelen & Vidic at the back? Next year next year…”
