Fabio Borini admitted it was “a day to remember” after the Italian striker scored his first Liverpool goal in the Reds’ victory over Gomel in the second leg of their Europa League third-round qualifier.

Lucas Leiva and Luis Suárez combined to unlock the opposition defence in the 21st minute, with Borini on the end of the Uruguayan’s cross to volley Liverpool into the lead.

Captain Steven Gerrard and Glen Johhnson also scored to seal the Reds’ passage into the play-offs with a 4-0 aggregrate win, but the night belonged to Borini, who was ecstatic to open his Liverpool account.

“It was absolutely a day to remember,” Borini told the club’s website. “The fans were amazing and the atmosphere was unbelievable, just for a Europa League qualifier. To also get a goal was amazing.

“It felt like it was the first goal I had scored in my entire career. I tried to celebrate as I did for my first goal in Serie A.

“Since I signed, I’ve wanted to score my first goal as soon as possible. I got my first here at Anfield, which was very nice, and now I will carry on working.

“The goal will help me continue to settle in – goals always help.”

The 21-year-old also heaped praise on his new team-mate Suárez and was delighted to see the pair already start to forge a strike partnership.

“Suárez made the goal,” added Borini. “It was the first time I had played with him and it was absolutely amazing. He is an unselfish player, but we all played an amazing game together.

“Collectively, we did very well – both offensively and defensively. That was the key because we were very compact from the first second of the game until the last.”
