Brendan Rodgers has revealed he intends to give more of Liverpool’s youngster a chance to impress at Anfield after Raheem Sterling’s string of impressive displays for the Reds.

The Liverpool boss handed the 17-year-old a starting berth in their 1-0 victory over Hearts last week, before the winger completed 90 minutes in a 2-2 draw with Manchester City at Anfield on Sunday.

Rodgers has been limited in the transfer market this summer compared to rivals Arsenal, Chelsea and Manchester United, with the former Swansea manager signing Joe Allen, Fabio Borini, Oussama Assaidi and Nuri Sahin.

But with Rodgers still looking to strengthen his squad, he revealed the club’s youngsters have a chance to stake their claim for a regular starting spot.

“Young players will run through a barbed wire fence for you,” Rodgers said.

“Older players will look for the hole or just turn back and not even go through it. But you get that freshness from Raheem. I like exciting players as well and he is a boy that excites you.

“This might be a good opportunity for them. Because we don’t have the money that some of our rivals have, I want to make the philosophy through the club that allows us to bring players from the academy into the first team.

“We want to develop what this club has had for many years and develop top young players.”

Rodgers has been particularly impressed by Sterling’s impact over the past two games and is backing the winger to develop into a top player for the Reds.

“I have seen a lot of development in him in a short time,” he added.

“He takes on a lot of the concepts and he is very good with instructions. Normally wingers want to do their own thing but he is tactically improving every day.

“I am certain over the next few years that he will develop into a very good footballer. We just have to make sure that we keep the pressure off him.”
