The 30-year-old spent last season on loan to Lille after a disappointing first year at Anfield – and Reds fans largely backed the prospect of selling the midfielder on Twitter.

Here are some of the Tweets that caught our eye.

Dan Kennett ‏(@DanKennett) would be pleased if Cole’s exit paves the way for a move for Clint Dempsey: “If #LFC can conjure an exit for Joe Cole and use Jay Spearing & Cole to fund Clint Dempsey this would make me infeasibly happy.”

Rebekka Arnold ‏(@3beksbabe) has been disappointed by Cole’s impact at Anfield: “Going to miss Joe Cole at #LFC, with all the hard work he did for us.. oh wait.”

But Martin Takawira (‏@zimkopite) sticks up for the midfielder: “Let’s not be too hard on Joe Cole – honest enough lad who really wanted to play for us but it just hasn’t been like Fernando Morientes!”

Andrew Potts (‏@ChairmanPotts) reckons Cole still had a role to play at Liverpool: “Joe Cole would’ve been a fine squad player. Having said that, getting him off the wage bill and getting a replacement would be nice too.”

And Martin Richmond (‏@MuserMartinLFC7) hopes Cole’s exit will herald the arrival of a new striker: “Hoping the Joe Cole rumours to West Ham are true, we need him off the wage bill to buy a clinical forward!!”

Ameer Hamza Asif (‏@AmeerHamzaAsif) wants Charlie Adam, Stewart Downing and Spearing out too: “Yes, yes Joe Cole might be leaving and now we need Adam, Spearing and Downing out so more money for transfers for LFC.”

JJ ‏(@JJtoLFC) wants to know which set of fans are happier about his proposed transfer to West Ham: “I don’t know who’s more happy about Joe Cole, #WHU fans or Liverpool fans.”

While Dominic (‏@DominicLeon) is wary: “The problem I have with signing Joe Cole is that he’ll cost upwards of 65k p/w and will likely be regularly injured. Kieron Dyer burned us.”

And Michael Lockhart ‏(@locky2015) isn’t convinced: “I’d be really happy that we were getting Joe Cole back………if it was 2004. Might as well call fat Ronaldo too, see if he fancies a game.”

James Delahaye ‏(@Jimmy_D123) is bemused by Sam Allardyce’s transfer strategy: “West Ham in for Joe Cole? This after they’ve signed Jarvis and failed to sign Carroll? How does he fit into that style?”

Finally, Conor O’Boyle (‏@oboyleconor) still rates Cole: “Signing Joe Cole could be a great move for West Ham – one of the best midfielders in the Premiership when he’s at his best!”
