The 30-year-old signed a five-year deal when he joined Madrid from the Reds in 2009, but Spanish newspaper Sport is claiming Alonso will not sign a new deal with the La Liga champions.

Masses of hopeful Liverpool supporters encouraged Brendan Rodgers to make a move for the former Real Sociedad captain on Twitter, despite the club’s recent signing of Joe Allen.

Here are some of the Tweets that caught our eye.

Sam Humphries (‏@S_H_U_M_P_O) would prefer Alonso to Joe Allen: “I would happily bring @XabiAlonso back to Liverpool, stuff Joe Allen!”

And James Cleaver (‏@jayDC1566) believes Alonso would be the best signing Liverpool have made in six seasons: “If Liverpool get Xabi Alonso back, it would be the best signing we have made in the past six years #comeback!”

But Yousaf Saleem ‏(@YSaleemOfficial) thinks Alonso has outgrown Liverpool: “Xabi Alonso back in the Premier League would be great to see but he’s too good for Liverpool now.”

However, TRON CAT (‏@MattieOufc) is not surprised to see Alonso mulling over his Madrid future: “Xabi Alonso rejecting a contract at Real Madrid doesn’t surprise me. Too many midfielders in that team now and they’re looking for more….”

Jack (‏@Jack54HD) recalls a promising interview: “Xabi Alonso did say in an interview that coming back to Anfield would be option! Let’s hope that comes through, would be amazing!”

And Ryaann (‏@Ryyyyy69) would certainly be happy: “If Xabi Alonso really is coming back to Liverpool, I will cry with happiness!”

David Boler (‏@DaveBoler) finds the speculation hilarious: “One of funnest things I’ve heard in a while – as if Liverpool fans think Xabi Alonso is going to sign for them again!”

Alex Ievoli (‏@AlexIevs) is predicting Madrid to move for Tottenham’s Luka Modric: “Xabi Alonso leaving Madrid will mean Luka Modric is now top priority. Levy must be licking his lips.”

Nick Pooley ‏(@NickJPooley) is unconvinced: “Yes. Xabi Alonso is going to leave Spanish champions Real Madrid to play for Liverpool in the Europa League and fight for top eight. #Deluded”

Lee ‏(@vewdoo) reckons Alonso’s name is trending because United fans are worried: “I like how Xabi Alonso is trending worldwide mostly due to Manchester United (+other) fans worrying themselves that he might return to Liverpool.”

Meanwhile, Rateb Tazkarji ‏(@RatebTkj) urges Sir Alex Ferguson to move for Alonso: “Xabi Alonso is the only mature player to replace Paul Scholes next year, a must get!”

Finally, Matthew Miller (‏@MatthewMiller07) is an optimistic Wigan Athletic fan: “Xabi Alonso and Wigan both trending. Without checking, I will assume that Xabi Alonso has agreed terms with Wigan. What a capture.”
