Manchester City’s Edin Dzeko: I’m too good to sit on the bench

Edin Dzeko has declared he is “too good” to spend another season sitting on the bench at Manchester City.

The 26-year-old, who joined Eastlands outfit for £32.5m in January 2011, netted 14 goals as City won their first Premier League title.

However, the Bosnia and Herzegovina striker only started 16 league games as Roberto Mancini preferred Sergio Aguero and Mario Balotelli to lead City’s attack.

The former Wolfsburg forward admitted it was a frustrating experience and has hinted at a possible move away from the Etihad Stadium unless he becomes a first-team regular.

“In the second half of last season, I suddenly got to start far fewer games – and I’ve got no idea why,” Dzeko told the Sun.

“I lost my rhythm. I joined City in order to play in matches. I never imagined that things would turn out the way they have.

“I am too good for the bench. If I continue to sit matches out, then anything is possible.”

Meanwhile, City midfielder James Milner says the club’s main ambition next season is to make progress in the Champions League after being eliminated from the group stage last term.

“Obviously we had a successful season last year, so we want to build on that,” said Milner.

“We want to improve in Europe as we were disappointed with our performance in the Champions League last year, so that’s a massive thing for us.

“On a personal level, I just want to contribute as much as I can, play as many games as I can and help the team win more trophies.”
