Mark Hughes insists Queens Park Rangers supporters should have high expectations for the Hoops this season.

The 48-year-old helped steer QPR to safety in May amid dramatic circumstances as Manchester City’s 3-2 victory over Hughes’ side was rendered meaningless in the relegation battle as Bolton Wanderers failed to beat Stoke and dropped down to the Championship.

Hughes has strengthened his squad significantly over the summer, making eight new signings, with the club set to unveil the reported £10m capture of Tottenham centre-half Michael Dawson following a disastrous 5-0 defeat by Swansea City in their Premier League opener on Saturday.

Following their survival last season, Hughes promised that QPR would avoid a similarly desperate situation in the top flight under his stewardship – and the Hoops boss insists the club’s fans should be optimistic this term.

“We just knew that it was vitally important to get to the end of the season [and avoid relegation],” said Hughes.

“Although it was traumatic at times in the period from January until the end of the season, certainly we all feel we have benefited from that experience and it brought the group together as well.

“Those [are] experiences that we’ve gone through together as a group. Now we’ve had the benefit of a pre-season, and added quality as well, I just felt that it was the right thing to say.

“I’ll stand by that statement.”

He added: “I’ve always been of the view that you’ve got to keep peoples’ expectations high.

“They don’t want to be told that it’s going to be a struggle again. Some managers do, knowing full well that the team has the ability to be much higher than that.

“I never underplay the opportunity that we have this year. I fully expect us to have a good season.

“I don’t underplay it so I look good by overachieving. Fans want to be told and hear that their team is going to have a good season, and I fully expect us to have.”
