Newcastle transfer target Mathieu Debuchy still wants to leave Lille
Lille right-back Mathieu Debuchy still wants to leave the Ligue 1 outfit this summer amid interest from Newcastle United
Mathieu Debuchy has revealed he is still hoping to leave Lille this summer amid continued interest from Newcastle United.
The 26-year-old helped Lille to a 2-1 victory over St Etienne on Saturday as the new Ligue 1 season got under way.
Debuchy was in impressive form for France at the European championship, sparking interest from a host of top clubs including the Magpies and Internazionale.
Lille manager Rudi Gracia has insisted the defender is not for sale but Debuchy reiterated his desire to secure a move away from the club.
“I don’t want to talk about my future,” Debuchy told Canal+. “I heard what the chairman said.
“The transfer window is open until September 4 [in France]. I still want to go. We will see.”
His France team-mate Yohan Cabaye recently called on the Newcastle hierarchy to complete a deal for the right-back.
“Mathieu has made a very difficult to decision to leave Lille, but he has made the decision. Now I hope Newcastle push for Mathieu and I want them to do the deal,” Cabaye told The Journal.
“I spoke with him two days ago and he told me he wants to come. I hope Derek Llambias and [owner] Mike Ashley will do the business now.
“He wants to play for Newcastle and I hope that he comes to Newcastle because, of course, he is my friend, but also a very good player for Newcastle.”
