Newcastle transfers: Move for Liverpool’s Carroll unlikely – Pardew

Newcastle transfers: Alan Pardew says it is unlikely Andy Carroll will re-join the Magpies from Liverpool before next Friday

Alan Pardew has played down the speculation linking Andy Carroll with a return to Newcastle United this summer.

The Liverpool striker, who moved to Anfield from the Magpies in a £35m deal in 2011, has been heavily linked with a transfer away from Merseyside since Brendan Rodgers was named as Kenny Dalglish’s successor at Anfield.

West Ham United were keen to sign the 23-year-old England international on a loan deal but Carroll turned down the chance to move to Upton Park.

And his former club were touted as another possible destination for the forward – but Pardew says a deal is not looking likely.

“I don’t think so,” said Pardew when asked if Carroll could return to St James’ Park before the transfer window closes on Friday.

“We’re talking more of a younger player who could perhaps take the club forward.

“We’ve taken two or three younger players this season who have done very well for us. It depends if the price is right and everything fits the bill.”

Meanwhile, Manchester City goalkeeper Joe Hart admits his England team-mate may have no choice but to look elsewhere if he wants to play regular first-team football.

“I’ve had times when I have had to look elsewhere and I’m sure that may happen in the future,” Hart told the Mail on Sunday.

“At the moment it’s happening with Andy. If he starts or comes off the bench, you know you are in a game. If you speak to centre-halves, I don’t think they would want to play against him.

“He might not please everyone but he is a hell of a good player and a hard player. I would back him to succeed whichever way it turns.

“If he stays at Liverpool, there is no reason why we can’t see him in that starting line-up and everything is resolved.”
