Newcastle’s Alan Pardew: Vurnon Anita is exceptionally talented

Newcastle United manager Alan Pardew says Vurnon Anita is "exceptionally talented" after the midfielder joins from Ajax

Alan Pardew has described Vurnon Anita as “exceptionally talented” after the midfielder joined Newcastle United from Ajax for an undisclosed fee on Thursday.

The Netherlands international has signed a five-year deal at St James’ Park, and Pardew confirmed the 23-year-old will be fit for Newcastle’s opening Premier League game against Tottenham Hotspur.

“We are delighted to secure the services of Vurnon,” Pardew told Newcastle’s website.

“He is an exceptionally talented footballer with great technical ability, which is exactly what I’m looking at in a player. And, at 23, we hope his best years are at Newcastle.

“He has come through the Ajax youth system which is world renowned for bringing up players the right way, and I am sure he will fit seamlessly into the squad of players we have here.

“Vurnon has done his pre-season, and indeed already played one competitive game, so he’s up to speed and ready to play when I need him.”

Anita was an integral part of Frank de Boer’s Ajax side that won successive Eredivisie titles over the past two seasons, and Newcastle’s latest signing has set his sights on winning more silverware with the Magpies.

“I won almost everything in Holland so the step was not difficult to make. Now I think we can also win trophies with Newcastle and it’s time to do that,” Anita said.

“In the Premier League especially, every game is tough so it can help me also to grow in my football skills.”

Anita, capped three times by the Netherlands, also revealed his compatriot and current Newcastle number one Tim Krul played a big role in convincing the midfielder to move to St James’ Park.

“He told me to join Newcastle, and said it was a very nice club with great supporters and everything is nice and that he would like me to come here,” he added.

“I trust him so I think we can have a nice time here.”
