Van Persie signing will give everyone at Man United a boost, says Carrick
Michael Carrick says Manchester United's capture of Robin van Persie from Arsenal will "give everyone a boost" at Old Trafford
Michael Carrick believes Robin van Persie’s imminent arrival at Manchester will give everyone at the club a “boost” ahead of the new Premier League season.
United have agreed a £24m deal to sign the striker, with the Netherlands international expected to agree personal terms and complete a medical at Old Trafford on Thursday.
Van Persie, who will reportedly sign a four-year deal at Old Trafford, scored 30 goals in 38 league appearances last season, and Carrick admitted his delight at Sir Alex Ferguson’s latest signing.
“It’s great news,” Carrick told BBC Sport. “He had a terrific season last year and he’ll just strengthen our squad even more.
“He’s a terrific, world-class player. We’re all for bringing in players of that ability and it will give everyone a boost.
“It’s great timing with the game on Monday night.”
Ferguson had Andy Cole, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, Teddy Sheringham and Dwight Yorke at his disposal when United won the treble in 1999.
And Carrick believes the current crop of United forwards – Javier Hernández, Wayne Rooney, Danny Welbeck, and soon Van Persie – could provide a platform for the Red Devils to repeat the feat 14 years later.
“The club over the years has always had strength and depth, and it’s about the squad, not just the 11 on the pitch,” he added.
“The manager has said that, and he’s gone on record and saying the team in 1999, because of the four forwards they had, was one of the most exciting and one of his happiest times.
“Hopefully we can repeat something like that.”
