Gareth Bale turned down the chance to hit back at Charlie Adam’s camp after the Liverpool midfielder’s agent launched a public defence of his client following the Tottenham winger’s criticism of the Scot.

Bale had branded Adam a “coward” after the Reds midfielder’s dangerous challenge forced the Wales international off at half-time during a pre-season friendly between Spurs and Liverpool at the weekend.

Adam’s agent Kenny Moyles responded to the criticism by insisting his client is not a malicious player – but Bale, who suffered ankle ligament damage following a tackle by the former Blackpool midfielder in 2011, was reluctant to continue the bitter war of words.

“I’m not going to comment,” said Bale. “People like that are not worth commenting on, to be honest. He knows what he’s done wrong so we’ll just leave it.

“[Pre-season] has been a bit of a rollercoaster. There’s been a lot of stuff in the media but I don’t pay too much attention to that. The most important thing for me is to get match fit ready for the start of the Premier League season.”
