Jermain Defoe admits he is considering his future at Tottenham Hotspur to avoid another “heartbreaking” season at White Hart Lane.

The Spurs striker was restricted to just 11 starts in the Premier League as former Spurs manager Harry Redknapp preferred Emmanuel Adebayor to lead the north London club’s attack last season.

The England international still managed to score an impressive 14 goals in all competitions, but Defoe is keen to hold talks with Andre Villas-Boas about where he will fit into the new manager’s plans.

“Everyone knows how much I love Tottenham. Everybody knows that they are the club I want to play for,” Defoe told the Daily Mirror.

“But last season was heartbreaking for me in terms of putting my body on the line, being prepared to give everything for the club and not getting a game.

“Obviously I have to think seriously about my future. I will talk to the club and see what happens but right now all I want to do is what is best for Tottenham.”

Villas-Boas, who replaced Redknapp at White Hart Lane in June, has expressed his desire to sign a new striker, with a permanent deal for Manchester City’s Adebayor yet to materialise.

“In this market it’s important to make good, sound bids, not just to do anything for the sake of it,” Villas-Boas said last week.

“We are hopefully moving in the market in the next couple of days or weeks.

“We are trying to deal with the market. Lots of teams are having difficulty, there’s not a lot of money around and teams try to hold onto their assets as best they can.

“We’re just trying to make the best decisions possible before the start of the league – hopefully trying to solve the issue with one more striker before the Newcastle game.”
