Arsenal to ‘discuss’ offering Bacary Sagna a new contract
Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger insists Bacary Sagna "loves" the club and says a new contract is being discussed
Arsene Wenger insists Bacary Sagna “loves” Arsenal and has revealed the club are preparing to offer the defending a new contract.
Sagna recently sparked reports linking him with a move away from The Emirates after the France international expressed his surprise at Robin van Persie and Alex Song’s exits this summer.
But Gunners boss Wenger says the right-back is fully committed to the north London club and claims his comments were taken out of context.
Wenger said: “I’ve said that Bacary loves the club and will stay here and his article has been twisted a little bit because he spoke about Lukas Podolski and Santi Cazorla and there was never a word of that in the article.
“He didn’t want to be negative but you all know what you can do with any statement.
“Yes [I spoke to him]. It’s important to understand what he wanted to say. What he wanted to say was not exactly the spirit of the whole thing.
“You have the freedom to say what you want in life but it is also important you understand what people feel about the club and their job. It’s always important to have good communication with them.”
Wenger also confirmed that the Gunners will “discuss” the possibility of handing Sagna a fresh deal, with his current contract set to expire in 2014.
“It [a new contract for Sagna] will be discussed,” added Wenger. “I expect him to stay and I want him to stay.
“The interview does not really reflect at all the love he has for this club because he has always shown total commitment on the football pitch – for the team and the club.”
Wenger added: “That he was disappointed [that Song left], I can understand that. But when you look at the number of players we have in midfield, you can understand that as well.
“He is close to Diaby as well. So when you have Arteta, Diaby, Cazorla and Song, one can’t play.”
